With the arrival of spring, temperatures rise and with them come unwanted visitors:

Cockroaches, rats, mosquitoes and other pests that can compromise the comfort and safety of your home or business.

Keeping environments free of these threats requires prevention and specific care.

To help you, we’ve put together some essential tips that will considerably reduce the risk of infestation.

1. Carry out a deep cleaning

  • Spring cleaning is an excellent way of eliminating factors that attract pests, such as food waste, accumulated water and hiding places;
  • Thoroughly clean pantries and cupboards;
  • Vacuum skirting boards, carpets and hard-to-reach spaces;
  • Replace garbage bags regularly and keep containers well sealed.

2. Eliminate water sources

Standing water is one of the main factors in the proliferation of pests.

  • Check gutters and pipes for leaks and moisture accumulation;
  • Make sure taps are not dripping;
  • Empty toilet bowls and other containers that can accumulate water.

3. Protect the outside area

If you have a garden or yard, some precautions are essential to prevent pests from finding an ideal refuge:

  • Keep vegetation well trimmed and away from walls;
  • Avoid the accumulation of leaves and branches that can serve as shelter;
  • If you have firewood, store it at least 30 cm from the ground and away from buildings.

4. Seal entrances and openings

Pests can infiltrate through small cracks and gaps. To prevent entry, you should:

  • Seal cracks in walls, skirting boards and near cables and pipes;
  • Use suitable seals on doors and windows;
  • Inspect the roof regularly, as leaks can pave the way for infestations.

5. Pay attention to waste and recycling

Garbage cans are one of the main sources of attraction for pests. To minimize the risk:

  • Use containers with tightly closing lids;
  • Periodically wash out garbage cans;
  • Make sure bags are tightly closed before disposing of them.

6. Check products and parcels

Many infestations begin with contaminated packaging. Whenever you receive goods:

  • Inspect items thoroughly before storing them;
  • Look out for signs such as gnawing, small holes or droppings;
  • If you find signs of pests, dispose of the affected products immediately.

7. Rely on a professional

If, despite all the care you take, you find signs of pests, it is essential to act quickly. Inadequate control can result in:

  • Incorrect use of pesticides;
  • Exposure to toxic substances;
  • Application of products in inappropriate places, putting children and animals at risk.
