Cockroaches in summer: understand the cycle and learn how to fight them

Cockroaches are insects notorious for their ability to adapt and survive in different environments, which makes them one of the most common pests during the summer.
These insects, which belong to the order Blattodea, have a long history of coexistence with humans and are known for their resistance and ability to reproduce quickly.
Characteristics of cockroaches
There are around 4,500 species of cockroach worldwide, but only around 30 are associated with human environments.
Among the most common species are the American cockroach (Periplaneta americana), the German cockroach (Blattella germanica) and the Oriental cockroach (Blatta orientalis).
These insects have flattened bodies, long antennae and spiny legs, which allow them to move quickly and hide in small crevices.
Life Cycle
The cockroach life cycle consists of three stages: egg, nymph and adult.
Females lay eggs in capsules called oothecae, which can contain from 10 to 50 eggs, depending on the species.
The nymphs hatch from the eggs and go through several moults until they reach the adult stage.
The development process from nymph to adult can take from a few months to a year, again depending on the species and environmental conditions.
Habitat and Behaviour
Cockroaches are mainly nocturnal and prefer warm, damp and dark environments, such as kitchens, bathrooms and basements.
They feed on a variety of organic materials, including human food, paper, fabric and even glue. This wide-ranging diet contributes to their ability to survive in different conditions.
Problems Caused by Cockroaches
Cockroaches are known for transmitting diseases and causing allergies. They can carry pathogenic bacteria in their bodies and faeces, contaminating food and surfaces.
Among the diseases associated with cockroaches are salmonellosis, dysentery and gastroenteritis. In addition, particles from their faeces and exoskeletons can trigger allergic reactions and asthma in sensitive people.
Prevention and Control
Controlling a cockroach infestation can be challenging, but some measures can be effective:
- Hygiene: keep the house clean, especially food preparation and storage areas – avoid leaving food waste in sinks or accessible places – remove attractants and dispose of rubbish daily or keep it closed in suitable containers;
- Food storage: store food in tightly closed containers;
- Eliminating water and humidity: fix leaks and use dehumidifiers – Reduce humidity with constant natural ventilation;
- Sealing cracks: seal cracks and crevices in walls, floors and skirting boards.
- Blocking access: seal off entrances to windows, doors and crevices and use window screens;
- Use baits and insecticides: apply appropriate baits and insecticides, preferably with the help of pest control professionals.
Cockroaches are one of summer’s most persistent and undesirable pests, and their ability to adapt and reproduce quickly makes it essential to implement effective preventative and control measures.
With proper attention to hygiene and the home environment, it is possible to minimise the risks associated with these pests and maintain a cockroach-free home.
