Factors Contributing to the Increase in Urban Pests in Summer
In summer there is a significant increase in urban pest activity for various reasons, all of which are related to environmental and behavioural factors that favour the survival and reproduction of these organisms.
Here are the main reasons:
1. High Temperatures
Heat speeds up the metabolism of many insects and other types of pests, such as rodents. This makes them more active in their search for food and places to reproduce.
Increased metabolic activity can also speed up the life cycles of these organisms, leading to faster population growth.
2. Food availability
During the summer there is a greater availability of food, both indoors and outdoors, which favours the proliferation of pests. Fruit and other foods tend to deteriorate more quickly in the heat, attracting insects such as flies and cockroaches.
In addition, the frequency of outdoor activities, such as picnics and barbecues, can lead to an increase in food waste, attracting pests.
3. Humidity and Available Water
Summer, especially in regions with high humidity or frequent rainfall, provides ideal conditions for the reproduction of many pests, such as mosquitoes and cockroaches, which need water to complete their life cycles.
Standing water in containers, puddles and other places can become a breeding ground for mosquitoes, for example.
4. Reproductive cycles
Many pests have life cycles that are influenced by seasonal factors. Summer, with its favourable temperature and humidity conditions, is the time of year when many of these organisms enter their period of maximum reproduction, increasing pest populations.
5. Human activities
People in summer tend to spend more time outdoors and leave doors and windows open to ventilate their homes, which can facilitate the entry of pests.
Increased travelling and tourism can also contribute to the spread of pests from one area to another.
These factors combined make summer a particularly active time for urban pests, requiring stricter control and prevention measures to mitigate the impacts of these infestations.
Extermínio – Higiene Controle Lda specialises in urban and agricultural pest control, focusing specifically on the preventive and corrective control of pests that affect our daily lives.
In the context of helping to minimise our impact on climate change, we have introduced methods that require less biocides (50% reduction), methods with a total absence of chemicals, either by introducing capture devices, but also with cold temperature control (minus 77 degrees Celsius) and hot temperature control (plus 180 degrees Celsius), among others that interact with the digital component.
We have an experienced and competent team, equipped with the latest technologies for analysing, monitoring and applying the ideal solution for each case.
